White Pine : Wood Uses
Humans make use out of the White Pine by felling it for lumber. The wood of the tree is easy to work with and stains well, thus it is often used for furniture making. White pines are also sometimes used for Christmas trees.
The long trunk of the White Pine was often used for canoe making. Pennacook Abenaki people used fire to fell the tree and hollow out the middle, where it was then shaped with axes. The largest canoes made from white pines could hold up to 40 people. The girls of this people used the needles to make dolls and baskets.
The white pine is much more than a majestic giant; animals that inhabit the forests where White Pines grow use the tree as food and shelter. Birds such as the yellow-bellied sapsucker, black-capped chickadee, and pine warbler use the seeds as food and animals such as deer, rabbits, and beavers make use of the foliage and bark.
