Shadbush : Nutrition and Food
The shadbush fruit can also be used as food for people and it has a rich nutrition content. The analysis shows that the fruits have higher levels of protein, fat, fiber, calcium, magnesium, barium, and aluminum when compared with blueberries or strawberries. It is also a great source of manganese, magnesium, and iron for the human diet. The dark blue-black berries that ripen in June can be made into a delicious fruit pie. Michael Dirr writes that the Shadbush’s ripe fruit tastes “better than highbush blueberries.” And he notes, “I have had serviceberry pie and it ranks in the first order of desserts”.
