The University of Vermont is very influenced by the trees planted on campus. Whether we realize it or not, as we walk through campus, the environment we are surrounded by greatly effects our day to day lives. Pin oaks can be found in many areas around campus and mainly on central campus. The UVM green is also home to a few of the pin oaks as well as the area behind Old Mill and near the Davis Center. One of the best characteristics about the pin oak is its stunning looks all year long. During the fall, the leaves transform into a fantastic rustic color. Vermont is known for it’s beautiful autumn foliage and is the destination for many leaf peepers every year. The pin oak is a major contributor to this attraction. Across campus, pin oaks can be appreciated throughout the year as well. During the winter, the large, broad canopies hold big clumps of white snow. In the spring, during the months of April and May, the trees become bright green as they bloom for another warm season. During the summer, the thick canopies create wonderful shade, perfect for studying under. The pin oak is known to be a great tree for urban areas, therefore it fits right in with the university, providing a wonderful piece of landscape for anyone who steps foot on campus.
