In Europe, where it is native, the Norway maple ranges from southern Scandinavia to the Caucasus Mountains. They are primarily located in the lowlands and river valleys, and grow in small patches or individually in a large forest. In Europe the Sycamore maple is the common maple because it flowers three to four weeks later than the Norway maple, at a better time for insect pollination. The Sycamore is planted in Europe as the common street shade tree and displays many of the same invasive habits as the Norway maple in the United States. There is not an sense of foreboding for Europeans regarding the Norway maple and it is not considered invasive in Europe or Asia.
