Black Walnut and Chocolate Pie

Black Walnut Chocolate Pie (Edsel Little, 2011).

Black walnuts have many culinary uses since they are particularly flavorful and nutritious. They are a source of the omega-3 fatty acid alpha-linoleic, which is a ‘good fat’ associated with regulating the heartbeat, reducing cholesterol, and decreasing inflammation. Full of minerals like magnesium, potassium, iron, copper, mangese, and phosphorous, research suggests that consumption of black walnuts can even strengthen bone density.  Black walnuts are also low in simple carbohydrates and saturated fat.

Substituting the black walnut for other nuts in baked goods such as banana bread, brownies, or cookies or simply sprinkling some chopped nuts over a salad or incorporating them in a basic pesto sauce can be an easy way to make a recipe more gourmet and original.
