Southern Magnolia : Medicinal Uses
Historically the seed of the Southern magnolia has been used in traditional medicines, especially in Mexican and Chinese culture, for the many beneficial effects it provides for a multitude of ailments. This tree has been reported to help with high blood pressure, heart disturbances, dyspnea, abdominal discomfort, muscle spasm and infertility. The extracts from the Southern magnolia are remarkable for being able to help with abnormal, uncomfortable feelings during breathing as in the case of dyspnea, heart disturbances, and abdominal discomfort and can also aid in the inability of a person to reproduce.
A relatively new study has found two potential extracts from the seeds of this tree that may be utilized in modern medicine for epileptic patients when having an episode. An experiment was done on rats that looked at two chemical extracts from the plant: ethyl-ether extract as well as hydro-alcoholic extract, for its potential anticonvulsant properties when the rats were given maximal electric induced seizures. Ultimately the study found that the two extracts were capable of blocking the medically induced seizures at multiple different doses. Not only is this plant revered for its aesthetic beauty but it also holds the capabilities of helping millions of people worldwide.
