American Basswood - carved box

Sewing Box Carved out of American Basswood (JARM13)

The wood of the Basswood is considered some of the softest and lightest of the hardwoods. It is used to make numerous products for a variety of uses. The wood is odorless, so it is often used to make boxes and crates for packing food. Its lightweight property is especially useful in making shipping containers, since it doesn’t add a lot of weight to shipping costs.

It is a great wood to use for carving because it can be easily cut with and across the grain. The wood is used for everything from musical instruments and keyboard pieces, to shutters, matches, pictures frames, yardsticks, and tongue depressors.
