Dear Mrs. Keyes,
Please don't be too angry with me for only replying to your 2 letters of April 5th and 17th to-day. First of all I was kept terribly buy and then I was away from Berlin for a few weeks and it was not possible for me to write before.
It must indeed be very gratifying to you to have the degree you speak of conferred on you. Please accept my heartiest congratulations.
Naturally I can understand that an invitation to a trip around the world must be far more enticing than a sojourn in Germany and I should not in the least be surprised to hear that you have definitively decided to take this trip. I myself have very vague plans of perhaps going down to Arabia for a few weeks in the fall and if you decide to make your trip and get anywhere near the Red Sea I should be thankful if you would let me know.
Regarding a possible trip to Germany which we all should welcome very much I can assure you that as far as we are concerned everything would be done to make you comfortable and further your plans. Iw ill see to it that you get preferred treatment by the railways and a cheap rate in all the hotels and would also do my best to try and get a motocar put at your disposal for any traveling that you will do when here. I also would suggest a step of a fortnight or 3 weeks on some large German estate which naturally can be arranged without too much difficulty.
I should appreciate it very much if you would let me know as soon as possible what you have decided to do so that I can take matters in hand here and prepare your way as far as possible.
From the Carl Schurz Memorial Foundation I have heard nothing further except that they have received my letter and would consider the matter suggested. I fear however that this prolonged silence means that there is nothing that they can do for you. Perhaps you have heard from them directly.
I have nothing heard from Ruth in quite a long time but expect that she is still in Preiburg. I trust that you are well and hoping to hear from you soon. I am with kind regards,
very sincerely yours
