Dear Mamma,

Mrs. Cook showed me the letter this morning, saying you cannot come out tomorrow. I hope you are not ill! If I am all right, I will come and lunch with you, as I ought to go to the Old South afterwards.
I have been embroidering all the morning, and find that you have all the yellow and green floss. If I can't come tomorrow, won't you please bring them when you come?
Last night Nelly brought in this large and interesting box which had come by express.' I had my hopes all raised for maple-sugar or candy to have it turn out to be malt! I took it before I went to bed, and at breakfast, like a sweet lamb.
Hoping to see you Friday at the latest.
Very affectionately,
Frances
