Masks : Overview

Masks have been used in ceremonies by cultures throughout the world and over broad spans of time. Though these two masks have their origins in vastly different times and places, they share connections in their function and even in the materials used to make them. Although used in distinct ceremonial context, each mask serves to ritually transform its wearer into something different, whether spirit, human character, or ancestor. By doing so, the wearer is empowered, and he/she is allowed to be completely merged with the mask's identity and absorbed into the ceremony. Viewers should also notice intricate patterns formed by natural materials used in both masks, each constructed with expertise and care for use in a culturally important ceremony.
