James Underhill, Mining engineer, U.S. Mineral Surveyor, Idaho Springs Colorado. May 14, 1916. Dear Grandma, I was very glad to get your birthday letter and we were both very sorry to hear of your trials. The first year of married life is generally considered to be the hardest, and you are doubtless having much the same experience as others. Everything with us is the same as usual.. We have had about the usual winter but it is not lingering and chilling the lap of May as the poet pute it. Lucy and i went for a walk to day in the sunshine and arrived home in a good big snow storm. Tonight the ground is covered with snow. Aunt Lucy died very suddenly a few days after the new year. She was sick only a few hours. in fact, they did not know she was ill till she went. Mr. Cuthert also died very suddenly a few months ago in Denver. Since the Hills sold the Republican, we never hear of them anymore. They figured in every issue when they owned the paper but the new owners never mention them. Lucy joins me in love, your loving son, James Underhill
