San Antonio, Texas.
October 11, 1928.
Mr. W. F. Bigelow, Editor,
Good Housekeeping,
57th St. and 8th Ave.,
New York City.
My dear Mr. Bigelow:
It occurs to me that you may wish for a report of your representative’s progress.
The trip down on the boat was pretty dreadful, sanitary conditions being the worst I have ever encountered anywhere not excepting remote parts of the Orient, and the heat suffocation after the first twenty four hours—as indeed it has been ever since. However, this is all in the days work, so it did not depress me, and the freedom from interruption which can be secured nowhere else as it can at sea, permitted me to catch up with much miscelaneous writing.
I went directly from Galveston to Austin an had a wonderful three day visit with Governor and Mrs. Moody. The executive mansion is a charming old house, and I had one of the great thrills of my life out of sleeping in Sam Houston’s bed—a magnificent four poster hung with old rose brocade. They gave two delightful parties in my honor at one of which I met Mrs. Gilbert, who wrote that charming little story, “The Old House Speaks”. I liked her immensely and feel that she has it in her to become a valuable contributor.
