Dear Mr. de Haas:
I am very happy to tell you that I am planning to come to Germany this summer primarily to write a report on the progress of housing conditions in Munich, Frankfort a/m and Berlin for our own federal Housing Administration. I also hope, however, to be able to do some work on a new novel and to devote at least a few days entirely to pleasure.
Naturally, the four cities I have mentioned must be my first and main objectives, and it is therefore my plan to enter Germany via the Basle - Zurich route from Paris, and after spend-ing a few say in Lindau on Lake Constance to go directly to Munich. It would seem to me that my best route form there would be Ulm - where I would also like to stop - Mannheim, Frankfort a/m and Berlin via Halle and Leipzig. If you can suggest a better route, however, I should be much interested in learning about it.
I am not quite sure whether I shall sail for home form Hamburg or whether I shall return to France before doing so. The latter plan would permit me to make a circle tour of Germany going from Berlin to Dresden and Bayreuth. As I have never been to one of the Bayreuth music festivals, such a program would be most pleasing to me.
I expect to start for Germany about the end of July and to have a month at my disposal. I shall greatly welcome any suggestions you may make as to hotels, highways and personal con-tacts. While I naturally wish to be comfortable, I also wish to make the trip as inexpensive as possible and to save time by map-ping out a careful program.

I am traveling in my own car and I am accompanied by a young friend, Miss Harriet Whitford, whose family and mine have been closely connected for many years. As this is her first trip to Europe, I am anxious that it should be as pleasant as possible for her in every way.
The best address at which to reach me during my stay in France will be in care of the National City Bank of New York, 70 Champs Elysees, Paris.
