Dear Mrs. Keyes:
Please forgive my long delay in writing to you in regard to the publication of "The Shield of Faith."
It had been read by four of us here and the four have trembled on the verge. In the end, however, we have been compelled to decide against it. I would say for the four that it has not quite enough substance to make sound war time literary merchandise, notwithstanding its very decided appeal.
I wish you could fin it possible to put all of these shorter things into a drawer, look it up and hive the key to some one ( to me, for instance), with instructions not to return it to you until a Treaty of Peace is signed. In the meantime, you could get on with a book of say not less than 70,000 or 80,000 words, which would, I believe, be something that we should undoubtedly want, if it contains the
