My dear Dr. Souchon:
Many, many thanks for your kind letter of June 25th and for the photographs, which I found awaiting me here on my return from Crowley yesterday.
My new book, ALL THIS IS LOUISIANA, will, in my opinion, be greatly embellished, as well as rendered more interesting and valuable, by whatever pictures of your lovely daughter the art editor of Harpers selects from among those which I send him. As I explained in writing to Mrs. St. Paul about the matter, the final decision does not rest with me, for my responsibility is to offer a sufficiently large selection, so that the editor may take his choice. I will let you know the result as soon as I know it myself. Meantime, you may be very sure that I shall not send the one, taken at the Gomus Ball, unless I have official permission to do so. There are plenty without it, in any case, so if there is the slightest hesitation on the part of Judge Janvier, I should greatly prefer not to urge him.
If you and your family return to New Orleans before the book has finally gone to press – which, in this instance, means before I leave Louisiana for the summer myself, I should like very much to hve a conference with Dolly Ann, so that I may show her what I have written and make sure I have interpreted her great experience exactly as she would like to have me do so AND next every one who has helped me with it to participate in the festivities held at the time of its publication.
I deeply appreciate the complement you have paid my books, but if they deserve it, it is, in very large measure, because of the kind cooperation which I have received and for which I am deeply appreciative.
