Dear Mrs. Keyes:
Tuesday I stayed home because of a slight cold and took advantage of the opportunity to catch up with a bit of reading. Your article on Iraq interested me very much, but when I laid it down I had the feeling that I had missed something. Thinking it over later, I decided that it was the lack of any comment about the people of Iraq. You give us scarcely more than a glimpse of the natives, how they live, what sort of culture they have, if any, etc. These are the things that you featured so much in your South American articles particularly. I have a notion that most of our readers would be more interested in reading about the people of Iraq than about the mandate.
It was my fault that no check went out in January. Mrs. Cropsey thought that the arrangement was for six articles only, and our records showed that six had been paid for. However, the check for this last article has gone out, and I shall pay for the next one as early in March as possible. The depression has at last struck the editorial office, and we are being asked to cut down on expenses as much as possible and, of course, to avoid crowding too many payments into one month.
By the way, I do not remember that you sent any pictures for this article.
With best wishes.
Sincerely yours,
W. F. Bigelow
