                <p>John Marshall and Philadelphia</p>
<p>The illistration is of Congress Hall, where John Marshall, later to become Chief
Justice of the United States, read the immortal resolution of Henry Lee, shortly
after the death of Washington, describing the Nation's leader as "first in war,
first in peace and first in the hearts of his countrymen."</p>
<p>John Marshall was appointed Chief Justice by President Adams in 1801 and began a
term in office which lasted until his death in 1835. Whith a record of 44
decisions involving constitutional equstions, he has become known in history as
                    the Great Interpreter.</p>
<p>In 1802, one year after Marshall became Chief Justice, the Philadelphia Bar
Association was organized. It is the oldest voluntary organization of laywers in
the world. AMong the founders of the Assoication were friends of Marshall.</p>
<p>During his last illness, in his 80th year, John Marshall came to Philadelphia for
medical aid. Here he died; and ledgend has it that the Liberty Bell cracked
while tolling his death knell. 1955 Marks the 200th Anniversary of his
                    birth.</p>
