Postcards from Montpelier: Deforestation & Reforestation

Subject

Forests

Description

These postcards depict the deforestation and reforestation of Vermont’s capital, Montpelier. In the early 20th-century a few sparse trees dot the barren hillside above the town. Less than 50 years later, the capitol building, known as the “Golden Dome,” is surrounded by dense forest, and the state can once more be promoted to visitors as the “The Green Mountain State.”
